Reflection
There are warnings and there are WARNINGS! Several times the preacher delves into a most sobering and devastating caution. This one comes with skull and crossbones.
I had a dear friend of many years. She had a passion for Jesus, and for others to know his love. When continents separated us, it was she who loved us with countless letters from home. But with one letter our friendship and her future took an ominous dive. Mis-contextualizing the world’s most famous and probably best loved hymn, she wrote, “I’ve chucked in my faith. I no longer believe. My chains have fallen off and now I’m free.” Literally floored me!
Scripture is very clear about God’s outrageous mercy. Equally so, his outrage at those who trample that mercy. Feel the heavy weight of the preacher’s warning. Take God’s judgement seriously – not so you feel anxious and lose hope – but as encouragement to persevere in his love and hope. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.
Prayer
Lord, if loving me was worth your life and death, then loving you is definitely worth my life. Keep me, the ones I love, and your world-wide church flourishing in that love–alert and persevering to the end.
