Reflection
Sometimes today seems just too hard. Anything would be an improvement on this. Makes you long for familiar old places and routines, right? “We wanna go back to Egypt where it’s warm and secure,” moaned the Israelites after God freed them from slavery. “Mmmm, for some good ol’ Egyptian leeks and onions. Yeah! Give us leeks and onions!!” *
I have a brother who was kidnapped in Afghanistan. For six months he lived on greasy rice and black tea. One day a sack of onions was delivered to the isolated military outpost. The soldiers were overjoyed! Greasy onion-rice and tea! But for Joel (and for the longing Israelites) …onions? What a poor substitute for freedom. And our radical freedom is just the preacher’s point. In sympathy of our aches and angst of today, our frustrations and fears of tomorrow, Jesus entered our unholy mess. His shameful death loosed our shackles to the lord of sin and death.

Prayer: I love that you sympathise with me in my weaknesses, Jesus Christ. But don’t leave me to my self-pity, grief, disbelief. With your help I’m choosing to revel in the thrilling freedom that you accomplished. Remind me of someone else that needs this encouragement today.
