Reflection
My husband trains preachers. Three things, says he, (preachers love threes): be faithful; don’t be boring; and, ‘So what?’
Here at the end of his sermon our preacher gets practical. He’s already affirmed prophecy-come-true (from the ancient prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel), that God’s law is now written on our hearts. So What? What does that look like? Well, it looks like a well-trained child. A racer sticking to the track. An alleged criminal perfected and free. In language familiar to this crowd it means, Let’s continually offer a sacrifice to God. No, not the bloody kind. That’s been done. Now we offer praise–the fruit of lips that confess his name. Acceptable worship is symbiotic: we continually respond to God’s continual grace. It shows up in hospitality, in prison, in marriage, in our finances, in our contentment and sense of security, in a clear conscience, in putting up with suffering, our attitude to those in authority, generosity, prayer… Can we be more practical than to respond to God’s rich mercy with our whole lives!
Prayer
Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.*
