Reflection
Alwyn was and is a saint. One of the many characteristics that marked her as such was that she longed for people to know Jesus. One of her modus operandi was to introduce newcomers to the Gospel story of Jesus through her church’s stained-glass windows. A saint introducing saints.
Our preacher pivots on his feet to do the same. We’ve been touring the tabernacle. Now we’ll step into our present-day equivalent, a church. (We take for granted that churches were built to tell stories by their architecture and interiors.) It’s as if the preacher adopts Alwyn’s technique to tell a grand story of gospel hope. We’re gazing at a kaleidoscope of stories–Abel, Enoch, Noah–all tainted, stained. Abraham, Sarah, Isaac–stories created for eternity. Jacob, Moses, Rahab–each a testament to glory run through with veins of angst and hope. Prophets and martyrs who shot rainbow rays across dungeons and cathedrals. And there’s Alwyn! Shimmering, translucent stories having what in common? Faith and hope in what God has promised.
Prayer
All these heroes of the faith…and then there’s you, Jesus, our ultimate leader and example–submitting to a shameful death because you knew your Father’s good, eternal plan. I, too, trust your plan is good. Keep me and your struggling saints around the world, persevering in faith and hope.
