Reflection: Hanging out with crowds
Jesus is not your typical religious teacher. He goes to parties and he hangs out with crowds of people. Although we tend to think of him as just having 12 men with him, the disciples, it is clear that many more wandered with him. Not many of them are named, but in this passage three women are named.
Mary Magdalene had been healed from possession by seven demons. She will have the privilege of being the first person to see Jesus after he is resurrected (John 20:1–18).
Joanna was significant, being the wife of the manager of Herod’s household. She was used to life in a palace. No wonder Herod has heard so much about Jesus when the latter is brought before him (Luke 23:8).
There is also a woman called Susanna.
These women are using their income or inheritance to support Jesus. They are his patrons, and their role is crucial in allowing him to do his work.
At a time when women were limited in social freedom, and dependent on their husbands, Jesus gathered and accepted the patronage of these women.
Question: We are presented here with the opportunity of seeing the sacred in the everyday, even using our resources to empower others in sharing truth. How do you see God in the midst of the crowd?
Prayer: Lord of all, Thank you that Jesus welcomed and worked alongside these women who are named. Thank you that we can seek you in the midst of the many; and that you can use what we have to offer for your glory. Amen.
