Reflection: Telling stories
Yesterday we heard that Jesus’ strategy for impacting others was simple: make friends. In the same way, his strategy for communicating his teaching was simple: tell stories.
Story as a communication method is as old as human existence, and yet we are rediscovering its significance. Recent research confirms that if you give people a list of points, they will remember a couple; but if you weave that list into a story, they will remember every point. We have also learned that if someone tells us a story, we almost unconsciously seek to translate that story into our own context, to make meaning in our own lives.
Jesus told stories about things that were recognisable. In the story from today he is using images from his background as a carpenter builder. He is linking profound truth to everyday images.
Everyone knows that you should build a house on solid ground. In the same way, we should build our lives on truth, and put into practise Jesus’ teaching, so that our faith in God will be secure.
Jesus reminds his listeners that his teaching is not just for listening to, a source of knowledge. It is for living out, for practising. He lived out the truth that he spoke.
Question: How often do you tell stories as a way of sharing truth with others? How closely do you live out Jesus’ teaching?
Prayer: Loving Lord, It is easy to be hearers of the word but fail to be doers of the word. Help us to be people who tell stories and live out your truth. Amen.
