Reflection: Going to parties
We have already heard about Jesus making friends with undesirable people; and now we explore another surprising fact about Jesus: how much he enjoyed going to parties!
He is frequently found eating and drinking with others.
Parties are almost the opposite of religious gatherings. While the latter is controlled and predictable, parties are often spontaneous, informal and unpredictable.
Even though Jesus is hanging out with a Pharisee at this party, something unusual happens. A ‘sinful’ woman—probably a prostitute—brings a jar of perfume, and weeping, she kisses his feet and anoints him.
It is a moment of raw emotion and extravagance. The Pharisee host is shocked, and critical of Jesus for allowing this embarrassing scene.
Jesus uses this incident to remind the Pharisee that this woman’s actions are appropriate for someone who realises the forgiveness that he has come to offer; and he also chides his host for a lack of hospitality, a grave error in the middle east. The host should have arranged for his feet to be washed.
It is easy for us to be critical and judgmental, rather than to understand what is going on, and to see it through God’s eyes.
Question: How can we engage in everyday activities, like parties, as opportunities to see through God’s eyes?
Prayer: Lord of all the earth, We confess that sometimes our vision of what it means to do your work is too small. Please use our everyday work to hold back evil, promote good, and show people who Jesus is. Amen.
