Reflection: Taking time out to pray
Jesus has just started his new work: walking around, gathering followers, teaching, speaking and healing.
Already he has amassed quite a following, not least because of the wisdom of his teaching, and his miracles. Even though he frequently tells people not to tell others about their healing, the news spreads quickly. It’s understandable. He has just healed a leper. With five words from Jesus, this man’s life has been changed forever, from outcast to an acceptable member of society; from beggar to one able to work for a living; from alone to someone able to befriend others.
Crowds begin gathering to listen to his teaching as well as to be healed.
How will Jesus respond?
He prays.
When the work and stress become overwhelming, Jesus withdraws to places where he can be alone with God, to recover and draw from God in prayer.
This is not an occasional activity; Luke tells us that Jesus does this ‘often’. Even though he is God, he needs time with God; how much more do we?
Question: How often do you take time out, to withdraw from the incessant demands of everyday society to access God’s strength, and pray?
Prayer: Dear God, Thank you for this reminder to carve out time to escape into your presence and to draw from your strength, and to build relationship in prayer. Amen.
