Reflection:” …that he may lift you up”
The true basis of humility is to submit to God himself. Most of us find this easier said than done. We’re more likely to be self-reliant, self-confident and self-dependent. So to humble oneself before God and to admit we need his help is challenging. Maybe it is easier in times when we’re under acute pressure and it seems more obvious. The thing is, as we see here, we are asked to humble ourselves under ‘God’s mighty hand’! If we do that, then the promise is ‘that he may lift you up in due time’. The word ‘may’ here is really important. God can only lift us up if we both humble ourselves and ask. Then his mighty hand can do all that he has promised!
Why not ask now, today?
Prayer: Gracious God, you are always more willing to help us than we are to ask for that help. Grant us true humility that we may in due time seek your help and sense your mighty hands lifting us up. Amen.
