Reflection: Embracing genuine humility
Humility is hard to fake. In one sense it has to flow out of our hearts. On the other hand, as Peter puts it here, ‘clothe yourselves’. One way of thinking about this is the idea of ‘self-forgetfulness in the presence of others’. Rather than being self-consumed, be concerned for and interested in those we are with. If we have servant hearts, then we will want to live lives that are not self-consumed and where humility is seen in the way we respond to and engage with others. If God opposes the proud, then it is an even bigger thing to embrace genuine humility.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to clothe myself with humility and forgive my arrogance and pride. Help me to honour others by being interested and concerned for them. Give me the grace to live as you would have me live. Amen.
