Reflection: We had three bantam chickens we called Brownie, Whitey and Blackie. Not original, I know. They loved being picked up and held. It was very relaxing stroking the silky feathers on their backs, and the tops of their wings. Underneath, they were soft and downy and warm. Their downfall was that they often became broody and decided they were going to hatch imaginary eggs for days at a time. Their determination and commitment to this wasted exercise was remarkable. What I learnt through watching them is that chickens are driven to protect their eggs and their baby chicks no matter what. They hide them under the soft downy feathers of their stomach, and under their wings.
This Psalm provides two different images and metaphors of God. One evokes the image of a bird that covers us with its wings to keep us safe. The second is a fortress built strong and sturdy to protect us from our enemies.
The Psalmist is encouraging us to live in God’s shelter and stay in his shadow all the time, not just when things are going wrong in our life. He can be trusted. God is our refuge. Sometimes I like to remind myself of this, and picture myself safe and protected and warm under God’s wing. The only thing I have to do is choose to sit there. It doesn’t matter what else is happening around me.
Prayer: God, you are my refuge and fortress. You keep me safe and cover me with your wings. I choose today to trust you and live in your shadow. Amen.
