Reflection: Psalm 23 is one of the most known and loved psalms in the bible because it brings us comfort during hard times. It uses a whole list of verbs to describe how God loves us. He leads, refreshes, guides, comforts, prepares, and anoints.
However, this psalm does not talk about a life that is free from trouble. It acknowledges there are times of darkness and fear and enemies. There are also times of great blessing and rest and refreshment.
I wonder if the first verse of Psalm 23 presents our largest challenge. Are we willing to say The Lord is my shepherd and follow him no matter what our circumstances are? Can we then go one step further and be willing to say that we lack nothing, regardless of what is happening in our life? It is challenging us to trust God with no exceptions. It’s a tough ask.
Paul echoes this idea when he says, “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:12-13).
Prayer: Lord you are my Shepherd. You lead and guide me. You are with me in times of suffering and darkness when I can’t see the way to go. You give me rest and refresh me and protect me from my enemies. You say that I will dwell in your house forever. I pray today that I would have enough faith and trust in you to say that I lack nothing despite my current circumstances. Amen.
