Reflection:
The immediate application of this text is in relation to the very high cost of being Jesus’ disciple – “hating family”, “forgoing possessions” and “bearing the cross.” But looked at from another perspective, it also speaks to the radical nature of divine love. For humanity has been recklessly waging war with God from the beginning of our history without ever sitting down and deciding if we can afford the loss of life. In contrast, the King of Heaven, who could never conceivably face defeat in battle (Rev 19:17-21), after careful consideration of how much blood we would spill in our refusal to surrender, did the inconceivable – he set out the terms of peace. Reconciliation with his enemies would be achieved through the incalculably costly death of this King’s Son. The Prince of Peace endured a humiliating death on a cross to secure the deliverance of those who had warred against him.
What costs of discipleship are you willing to endure to secure peace for God’s enemies?
