The Desire for Peace

Day 10 of 14

NIV

Psalm 107:23-30

Some went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters.  They saw the works of the Lord, his wonderful deeds in the deep.  For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves.  They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away.  They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’ end.  Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.  He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea[a] were hushed.  They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.  Psalm 107:23-30 (NLT)

Reflection:

Most Australians have some affinity with the beach. From time to time, however, as we stand on the shore, we find ourselves gazing outwards. We are easily overcome by the sheer beauty, power and immensity of the ocean stretching out beyond us. For well over 100 years, fellow Australians have served this nation in our Navy. They have gone down to sea in ships, left loved ones and friends for long periods, all to ensure that the sea’s highways remain available for trade and commerce – our nation’s prosperity depends on it. Every one of those sailors is able to tell a story of being caught up in the middle of a frightful storm; hurricane-force winds and mountainous waves smashing into their ship. Sailors know how very small we are and how little power we are able to exercise over the sea. It is little wonder that many sailors find a sense of peace and security as they marvel at the mighty power of both creation and the creator.

In what ways have you been able to step back from the illusion of control over your world and appreciate your created dependence on God?

Prayer:

Loving creator God, we simply set our hearts to rest in your most gracious protection and care this day.  We acknowledge that we have so little control over much of what goes on around us and yet we act as if we can do anything we set our minds to. Please help us to humbly recall our creaturely dependence on you, for life and health and every good thing. In Jesus name. Amen.
