The Desire for Peace

Day 6 of 14

NIV

Matthew 5:9

Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called sons of God. Matthew 5:9 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1

Reflection:

In peacekeeping operations, Australian soldiers often find themselves confronted by armed mobs who are angry, hostile and belligerent. Governments come to agreements allowing for a return to peace; however, such decisions are not always followed on the ground. It often comes down to young officers or junior soldiers to defuse a volatile situation; lives depend on their courage, wisdom and cool headedness.

In 1 Samuel 25 Abigail brilliantly calms the righteously angry David. Her combination of courage, quick thinking and tact saves many innocent lives as well as that of her undeserving husband.

God willing, few of us will find ourselves in a deadly situation such as Abigail’s, but we all need to be ready to defuse family, social or workplace tensions that can quickly spiral out of control. A thoughtful word of tactful wisdom can prevent a world of recrimination and hurt.

Are you ready to be an ambassador for peace on earth, but also speak the words of eternal peace that come from the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ?

Prayer:

Elohei HaShalom, God of Peace, grant us the gift of self-control when passions run hot. Give us the heart and wisdom of Abigail to bring peace in the heart of conflict. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
