Reflection:
Reflection: Modern warships are getting larger. Yet the sea is always bigger and stronger. Calm days are pleasant but the days of wind and storm (“roughers” as we call them in the Navy) present physical, emotional and spiritual challenges and potential danger. Keeping a ship watertight and able to ride out the storm is vital.
Our passage from Mark 4 sees Jesus displaying the power of the Kingdom over nature. Moments before, he had been soundly asleep! Now he rises, “rebukes” the wind and “silences” the sea. Mark’s world view is full of demonic forces behind natural events. In language echoing the exorcism in the Capernaum synagogue (chapter 1), here the agent of God’s rule beats back a deadly attack on himself and the first members of the community he is forming as a beachhead of the Kingdom. In the renewed contest with “the Strong One” (Satan), Jesus once again proves stronger!
Can you think of “stormy” times in your life and faith when the “peaceful return” has prompted you to ask (again?), “who is this Jesus, for me?”
At the time of writing, Chaplain Andrew Watters was the Chaplain in HMAS Adelaide, one of Australia’s new LHD (Amphibious Assault Ship). Andrew and the ship had an extremely full year in 2018, providing a significant Australian maritime security presence across the Pacific and South-East Asia.
Prayer:
Eternal God, we thank you for Jesus, who blesses us with your healing peace in the storms of life. We pray for the grace to be “little Christs” for others so that, through our words and deeds, your kingdom may come and your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
