Reflection
Mary’s song began in her heart. She rejoiced and praised God for remembering her, for using her in his great plan, despite of (or rather, because of) her low position in the hierarchy of the world. And as she continued, her praise spilled over into the whole expanse of salvation history.
Her song reminds us of God’s surprising mercy through the ages, how he upturns our expectations of who receives his favour. In opposition to the way the world works — with praise of the rich and the mighty in their own right — the Lord chooses to scatter the proud, to bring down the self-made rulers, and instead, gathers the humble, raises the lowly, and feeds the hungry.
Through Mary’s praise, we are invited to take part in glorifying and rejoicing in the Lord who remembers the small, who uses the weak, whose eye is on the least of us. She reminds us of God’s nature, which will be seen in the ministry of her son, Jesus, who prepares us all room in our true home with him.
Prayer
Dear Father, you use the humble and small to accomplish your purposes. Teach us to value what you value, to treasure what you would have us treasure, beginning with the humble work of Christ in his death and resurrection. Amen.
