Reflection
Jesus was born, and the news went out with rejoicing and singing and praising and angels! This was news to shout about…but… to shepherds? And presumably, lots of sheep? Surely this news was better suited to palaces and temples and capitals. Not night-covered fields, livestock, and a collection of scraggly shepherds.
However, if the penny hasn’t dropped for us, if we still don’t quite get the fact that God chooses unlikely people, poor people, small people, people who are frail and unknown, then he once more upsets our expectation of and desire for grandeur and greatness. Once more God whispers (or perhaps shouts) that his glory has nothing to do with our notions of grandeur. God chooses whom he chooses. And on this night, he chose to make the most important announcement since the earth began — ’The King is born!’ — to shepherds whose care and watchfulness over their flocks reflected God’s own care over his people. Even the choice of who first received the news of Jesus’ birth was a reflection of God’s nature, as he lifted up the humble, as celebrated in Mary’s song.
Prayer
Lord, you choose whom you decide to choose. Help us to always trust your judgment as perfect, even if we don’t at first understand it. Amen.
