Reflection
Mary was greatly troubled. And wouldn’t you be? And wouldn’t I? After all, what does it mean if the Lord is with you? Gabriel said not to fear, that she had found favour with God, yet in his explanation of God’s favour, he gave her plenty to worry about.
He told her that she will become pregnant. News of a pregnancy is big enough, one would think. But then comes the real heart of the news. With each subsequent word of this message, the words take on flesh and a name, becoming more and more real with every syllable and sound. It is not just that she will be pregnant, nor that the baby will be a boy and that she is to call him Jesus, but that this boy is The Boy with a capital B, the true Adam, the One who had been promised from the very beginning: The King of kings, the king of whom David was only a foreshadowing.
News like this cannot be easy to hear. But it is good. Good news for thirsty souls.
Prayer
Father, you are good news for our thirsty hearts. You are our King, and you keep your promises. Thank you for giving us life in you. Amen.
