Reflection
When Herod heard of the Magi’s quest, he was greatly troubled. He could not dismiss it as false or irrelevant. No, he knew that it was true, and that the arrival of Jesus was deeply relevant and significant, just as Mary did, as Elizabeth did, just as Joseph did, just as the shepherds learned. But knowing the truth is not enough. It is what you then do with this truth. Unlike the others who received the news of Jesus’ birth, Herod did not yield to the Lord. He called the Magi in to meet him, secretly. So that no one would know. And yet, the Lord knew, and reveals to us Herod’s plans to have and to hold his small power.
Herod told the Magi to go and find the baby, but not to worship him. Instead, he placed himself between them and the person they wished to worship. Herod the mediator, who claimed to want to go and worship Jesus as well. But if Herod truly wanted to worship the King, he would do as the others did: hurrying and go searching in faith and in trust of the Lord. Herod did not prepare room for the king. Instead, he plotted and prepared a strategy to empty every room of him.
Prayer
Dear Father, you have shown us the way, the truth and the life in the person of Jesus, your Son. He is our mediator, our Saviour, our Lord. Open our hearts to prepare him room. Amen.
