Series Introduction
For the next two weeks, join us as we explore passages about the arrival of Jesus. The news of Jesus’ birth was neither comfortable nor convenient. Every person who received news of his arrival had to ‘prepare him room’ in some way or another. The same is required of us today. The question is: How will our lives be changed by doing so?
Reflection
There’s so much about this passage that confounds and surprises. First, the timing — in the sixth month — which is not a month in the reign of a king or an emperor, but rather, a month in the life of a baby in utero. And not just any baby mind you, but a seemingly impossible baby, John, promised by God to elderly parents. This fact is a reminder that this is God’s time, not human time.
And then, the place. God sent his messenger, Gabriel (who we are told earlier spoke in God’s place when he brought a message to a human) to Nazareth, a town in Galilee. Undoubtedly there was an important message to be delivered, and yet, it came not to the capital of the Roman Empire, nor even Jerusalem and its temple, but instead to a small backwater town in Galilee. And to whom?
To an unknown young girl, who happened to be engaged to a descendant of David. Yet, in God’s time, and in God’s place, this girl has a name — Mary. A name we know today, because God chose her. She was told she was highly favoured, and that the Lord was with her. How true those words were to be. How fearsome they must have sounded when Gabriel uttered them. These are words you don’t say lightly. They are heavy with consequence.
From these verses, we learn that God works in the time and in the place of his choosing. We haven’t even heard Gabriel’s message yet, but we know from these verses that it is God who chooses the time and place. It is God who prepares the room that we must make, even the secret place of a womb.
Prayer
Dear Lord, prepare the room in our hearts that we must make in order to welcome you fully into our lives. Amen.
