Reflection: The priority of faith
When Joshua spoke the words in today’s verse, he was an old man and wished to remind the Hebrew people of all that God had done for them as a people. He summoned them all together and provided an overview of the main events in their history from the time of Terah, the father of Abraham. He reminded them of all the ways in which God kept his promise to them as a people. He said that they had to choose; just as he chose God on behalf of his household. Joshua challenges them: will they go back to worshipping the gods of their forefathers and the people around them, or will they serve God only? The people vowed to serve God only. Joshua set up a stone as a visual reminder of the covenant that the people made to God via Joshua. He also challenged them to demonstrate this in the actions they take; actions that would be visible to all in the community and in their households, including the children.
Each of us needs to make a conscious and continuing decision about whom we will serve, for ourselves and on behalf of our families. Every day there are options to serve a multiplicity of other ‘masters’; things and priorities vying for our attention and allegiance. This daily decision to follow Christ is then enacted in the choices that we make throughout each day; our speech, our actions, our allocation of time, our prayers.
As families and as church families, this same need to choose to serve Christ needs to be a daily choice that is visible to those around us, including the children in our lives. We might also wish to consider the use of visual reminders of our collective and personal commitment to God, to remind both ourselves and the children in our midst of this commitment to serve God only.
How do you demonstrate your commitment to serve God only? How do you communicate this, both verbally and non-verbally, to the children in your midst?
Prayer: Father God, thank you for the commitment of Joshua to serve you only, despite the options open to him. Help us to be unswerving in our commitment to you and to demonstrate it so clearly, that it is unmistakeable to the children in our midst that we have committed our lives to you each and every day. Amen.
