Reflection: Faith is ignited in other settings
We do not worship an unseen God; we do not worship a God who fails to demonstrate his love and care for all that he has made. On the contrary, the Bible is full of examples of God’s concrete care of his people: bread for the people in Elisha’s day (2 Kings 4), the parting of the Red Sea, and the release of Peter from prison (Acts 12) are but a few examples of this care. These are examples in effect of God ‘doing good’ but God has also asked us to ‘do good’.
We do not know how God might use acts of ‘doing good’ for his own purposes; how they might fan into flame sparks of faith planted in the heart of another. I have heard of a person who sought God after observing how a person on bathroom clean up duty at a camp went about this task. Visitors to a Christian hospital in an African country were asked why they chose to attend this hospital rather than the government hospital closer to home. The answer? “Here the medicine is the same, but the hands are different.”
Each of us has many opportunities to ‘let our light shine’ in the days to come. A number of years ago we were invited to wear plastic bracelets with the letters WWJD standing for ‘What would Jesus do?’
Let us continually ask this question of ourselves as we prayerfully go about our days, as it is in the ordinary that God can do the extraordinary. We will no doubt have opportunities to ‘be the hands and feet of Christ’ to our wider communities, including the children.
Where can you shine the light of Christ’s love, that others may be made aware of God at work in the world?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that you continue to be at work in the world both directly and through the ‘hands and feet’ of your people. Help us to ‘do good’ in our communities that others may ‘see our good deeds and may praise our Father in heaven’. Amen.
