Reflection:
The hardest reality of all, of course, is that even as we trust in God’s goodness and his sovereign ways, it doesn’t shield us from pain and tragedy. Our friend Phil told me about a very difficult two-year period in his life. First, his mum died. Then, his wife’s dad became ill, and he died. Then his son-in-law was diagnosed with cancer, and he needed surgery. Then one of his close friends committed suicide. Then their daughter became unwell, and she needed a lot of help. He said during those entire two years he felt so close to despair. Everything was piling up around him. What if it he couldn’t cope? But throughout that time, Phil held onto one truth, from Isaiah 41. “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” Phil said he only survived because he kept going back to that verse, over and over again. Of course, Jesus himself promised the same thing, before he returned to his Father. “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Jesus didn’t say he would make everything smooth, or easy. He said he would be with us, in everything, even the most heart-wrenching moments, or years. He is with us today. He will never abandon us or leave us to our own devices.
Prayer:
Lord, I thank you that you promise to be with me today, in these questions and pain. Please help me to rest in your truth, knowing that ‘the very end of the age’ includes today.
