14 day plan

God’s ways, our ways

Day 1 of 14

NIV

Isaiah 55:8-11

8“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

neither are your ways my ways,”

declares the Lord.

9“As the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways

and my thoughts than your thoughts.

10As the rain and the snow

come down from heaven,

and do not return to it

without watering the earth

and making it bud and flourish,

so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,

11so is my word that goes out from my mouth:

It will not return to me empty,

but will accomplish what I desire

and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

Series Introduction

There is so much about God that we find hard to fathom — his timing, his ways, his plans, in Christ. Sometimes, we feel like we understand so little! And then, of course, we quietly remember that he is God, and we are not. His ways are above ours. His thoughts are above our thoughts. He knows all and he sees all. His timing is perfect, even when we can’t see it. Over the last five years, in talking with 300 people about their faith journeys, I have heard this theme, repeatedly. All 300 people acknowledged their questions and fears and struggles, within their deep trust in Jesus. They knew, at an unshakeable level, that God was still God. As they shared their stories and favourite Bible verses with me, their groanings and insights resonated with me. I’d love to share some of their stories with you, as an encouragement over the next two weeks.

Reflection:

It’s the reminder we all need. God’s ways are higher than ours. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. We cannot comprehend them, nor can we anticipate them, but we hold out our hands and trust in God’s character. He has heard our cries and our pleading. He hasn’t gone to sleep or become distracted. He is listening. Even when our struggles seem most severe, and our cries wordless, he is still God.

I remember when I was living in Nepal, homeschooling our three sons on a Himalayan ridge, within a civil war and a suffering community, without electricity, I cried out regularly. I groaned for all of us. I didn’t know what to pray. But I held onto a sacred truth: even in my weakness, God works tenderly, according to his purposes. He gently nourishes our souls with his word, like a thousand drops of rain on dry, cracked earth. May that be the case today for each of us. May God bring about the transformation we need, budding and seeding beyond what we can imagine.

Prayer:

Lord, I come to you, in submission and trust today. I thank you that your ways and thoughts are higher than mine… and I ask for your Spirit to shape me in new ways.

Isaiah 55:1-13

Invitation to the Thirsty

1“Come, all you who are thirsty,

come to the waters;

and you who have no money,

come, buy and eat!

Come, buy wine and milk

without money and without cost.

2Why spend money on what is not bread,

and your labor on what does not satisfy?

Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,

and you will delight in the richest of fare.

3Give ear and come to me;

listen, that you may live.

I will make an everlasting covenant with you,

my faithful love promised to David.

4See, I have made him a witness to the peoples,

a ruler and commander of the peoples.

5Surely you will summon nations you know not,

and nations you do not know will come running to you,

because of the Lord your God,

the Holy One of Israel,

for he has endowed you with splendor.”

6Seek the Lord while he may be found;

call on him while he is near.

7Let the wicked forsake their ways

and the unrighteous their thoughts.

Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them,

and to our God, for he will freely pardon.

8“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

neither are your ways my ways,”

declares the Lord.

9“As the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways

and my thoughts than your thoughts.

10As the rain and the snow

come down from heaven,

and do not return to it

without watering the earth

and making it bud and flourish,

so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,

11so is my word that goes out from my mouth:

It will not return to me empty,

but will accomplish what I desire

and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

12You will go out in joy

and be led forth in peace;

the mountains and hills

will burst into song before you,

and all the trees of the field

will clap their hands.

13Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper,

and instead of briers the myrtle will grow.

This will be for the Lord’s renown,

for an everlasting sign,

that will endure forever.”
