Reflection*
Jesus expands our understanding of the Holy Spirit further when he promises the gift of the Holy Spirit to people who love him and follow his teaching as an advocate and helper, and Spirit of truth, who will live within them (see John 14: 15-17; 16:7).
The Holy Spirit will teach Jesus’ followers everything, remind them of what he said (John 14.26), and declare God to them (John 16:12-15).
Jesus promises this Spirit will come when he goes away (John 16:7), after his death and resurrection, and breathes the Spirit upon them when he appears to them as part of their sending out to the world (John 20:19-22).
The Holy Spirit advocates for us,
helps us,
teaches us,
speaks God’s word to us,
lives within us,
and sends us out into the world to minister and live as Jesus did.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank you for your Holy Spirit, who advocates for us, helps and teaches us, speaks God’s words to us, lives within us, and sends us out into the world to minister and live as you did.
*In this series, each day’s devotion will be structured a little differently than our usual Daily Bible devotions, as Dr Thompson offers a Bible passage for reflection, and teaches us practical contemplative exercises that can assist with finding peace when everything around us seems difficult and hopeless.
