Reflection*
Times of pain and trouble are both real tests of our character and strength, and the only path to developing these attributes. Adversity tests whether we will continue to live according to what we value and believe in, or fall away and lose sight of our purpose in life.
Reflect again on today’s passage from James 1.2-8: “My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given you. But ask in faith, never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind; for the doubter, being double-minded and unstable in every way, must not expect to receive anything from the Lord.”
Prayer
Dear God, please help me as I face the challenge of riding above the waves and not becoming one with them. To do this, help me to keep focused on what is important — Jesus Christ.
*In this series, each day’s devotion will be structured a little differently than our usual Daily Bible devotions, as Dr Thompson offers a Bible passage for reflection, and teaches us practical contemplative exercises that can assist with finding peace when everything around us seems difficult and hopeless.
