Reflection*
Jesus brought a whole new layer to our understanding of the connection between God’s Spirit as pneuma (meaning ‘breath’, ‘wind’ or ‘spirit’ in ancient Greek), and our spirit. In the gospel of John, Jesus links the concepts of new life and re-creation, wind and spirit together when he talked to Nicodemus.
“Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no-one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.’ ‘How can someone be born when they are old?’ Nicodemus asked. ‘Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!’ Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, no-one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, “You must be born again.” The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” John 3:3-8
Jesus is connecting the concepts of having new life, and being recreated spiritually into the kingdom of God, with the idea of the Spirit being like the wind. If we are born of this same Spirit, we will be guided by him. The life he is inviting us into is one of adventure and listening to God rather than following our own self determined path.
The Holy Spirit recreates us,
Gives us new life,
Makes us part of the kingdom of God,
And leads us on a God directed adventure.
Prayer
God, thank you for recreating me, giving me new life, making me part of your Kingdom, and leading me on a God-directed adventure. Help me to be guided by your Spirit rather than follow my own self-determined path.
*In this series, each day’s devotion will be structured a little differently than our usual Daily Bible devotions, as Dr Thompson offers a Bible passage for reflection, and teaches us practical contemplative exercises that can assist with finding peace when everything around us seems difficult and hopeless.
