Reflection: Blessing Nine – Service
True faith will express itself in service. As we have been loved by God, we express that love by using our God given gifts and abilities in the service of others. We serve in the church, and we serve in the world. In doing this, light shines, and we hope and pray that in some small way it will lead to people acknowledging the God who we love and serve. During the pandemic we have been reminded again and again of the selfless service of the many who have gone above and beyond their paid responsibilities to serve us and our community.
I’ve always believed that the most rewarding things we can do are often related to voluntary service. We do this because we want to, and we do it in response to God’s prompting and guidance. Most of us wouldn’t be believers today if it wasn’t for the loving and generous actions of those who have served us in the past. Even for those of us who are paid ministers, I’ve always thought there should be a voluntary dimension to our ministry. We happily go above and beyond the call of duty.
Today, give thanks for those who are blessing you by serving you and give thanks for the opportunities you will have to serve others.
Prayer: Loving God, we thank you that you have modelled selfless love and service in your Son Jesus. Help us to serve you this day in humility and to your glory. Amen.
