Reflection: Let Your Kingdom Come
As my body succumbs to cancer, my prayers become shorter. That is to say, I speak fewer words. But paradoxically, I stay in God’s presence longer. So much is now beyond words… I have learned to be content, savouring God’s company.
If I have a persistent prayer, it is this: ‘Let your kingdom come.’ This is the desire expressed at the start of the Lord’s Prayer, the model prayer that Jesus taught us to pray. And it is no accident this phrase begins the prayer. For the Christian, everything is subsumed by this one overriding passion – to co-operate with God in establishing his Kingdom’s values and outcomes. That is what I want to commit my life to.
Who has not yet heard the truth about God? Who is yet to learn that God came as Jesus to die and pay the price for their sins that would otherwise keep them from God? Who has not yet heard of God’s relentless love? May I have the privilege of sharing these truths with you, so you too will take the place God always intended you to take in his kingdom?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, the world has spun away from living under your lordship and it is in a dreadful mess. So my prayer is this: let your kingdom come. Let the rightness and goodness of your good order come about. And let your true identity be rightfully acknowledged and celebrated.
