Reflection:Â Treasures in Heaven
There was a time when ships and working boats were beautiful. They were not the ugly metal boxes that float around our oceans today. They had elegant overhanging sterns like a seagull and graceful curving bows. Their deck-line typically had an upwards-sweeping curve that looked fabulous.
I once heard a shipwright talk about his craft. He was rebuilding an old-fashioned fishing smack. He said it took him a whole day to fit one plank. The amount of work it took to build a complete vessel was mind-boggling. But here’s the thing: many fishing smacks were designed to have a working life of just 25 years. Imagine that; all that work and all that beauty – just 25 years.
The reality is: it is only in the purposes of God that we can laugh in the face of decay and death. That’s quite something, isn’t it? When you partner with the God of eternity, the things you do will count for eternity. That confers a huge significance to every minute we are alive. Every minute is an opportunity to do something of eternal significance – even if it is as humble as giving a thirsty person a cup of water (Mark 9:41).
So, who do you know who’s thirsty?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, it is difficult to comprehend how anything I do might have eternal consequences. I am so ordinary. But you are not, and you make all the difference. Please help me to live faithfully… in a way that fuels the stories of eternity.
