Reflection: Knowing Christ
I begin a new round of chemotherapy tomorrow. No one can say how harsh it will be. All they can say is that it will only slow the cancer, not heal it. So, what can I look forward to? This morning, I read today’s verse with my wife over breakfast. It comes from a letter the apostle Paul wrote to his friends in Philippi. He wrote: ‘I want to know Christ – yes, to know the power of his resurrection.’
His longing is for two things: he wants to know Christ – to really know, because Jesus is good in every way that it is possible to be good. Secondly, Paul wants to experience the power of Jesus’ resurrection by sharing in it, i.e. in being resurrected himself. That’s not a bad wish list, is it?
But then Paul goes on to say something quite extraordinary: he wants to be so like Christ, and so “in” Christ, that he wants to share in the suffering of Christ. Paul is not being a masochist in saying this. He wants to share in Christ’s mission to save the world… and that necessarily involves a cross. Paul wants to play his part – and suffering is part of the deal. He goes on to say: ‘I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus’ (Philippians 3:14). That’s my heart’s desire.
I hope it is yours too.
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, My abiding ambition is to know you more. Your presence is everything, and I am nothing without it. Please keep me close to you and teach me more about the power of your resurrection, so I might fully understand the hope it gives.
