Reflection:Â Kingdom Rewards
There is nothing very subtle about this teaching of Jesus. It centres on the question, ‘When do you want your reward?’ If you do things, even pious things, that successfully earn you the praise or envy of others, then you have your reward. You will have achieved the outcome you set out to achieve. You will have been rewarded in this lifetime. But here’s the kicker: In concentrating on earning rewards in this life, you will have failed to do those things that get rewarded in eternity. So the question remains: When do you want your reward?
May I gently suggest that your true citizenship is not on this planet (Philippians 3:20-21). Rather, you were made to live forever in God’s eternal kingdom. So that’s where we should be investing our energies. The fact is: we are just temporary residents of planet Earth. This world is not our home. This reality explains why Christians feel so disconnected with the values and vicissitudes of this crazy, pain-wracked world. They are looking forward to a heavenly kingdom, and having a new body – one uncorrupted by sin, sickness and death (2 Corinthians 5:1-4).
I hope you are looking forward to it too.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, the paltry rewards offered in this life leave my soul malnourished and hungry for that which truly satisfies. Thank you for the beautiful things that await in eternity – the chief of which is the chance to be with you.
