Reflection:Â Perfect Love
God lives in community within himself of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, a community that is characterised by love. So when we seek the essential nature of Jesus beneath the skin of his humanity, the most characteristic feature we see is love.
Jesus is not made up of a balance of wrath and love, so that you are never sure which you will encounter. He is only made up of love. But here’s the thing: it is because he loves that he is wrathful against those things that would destroy the object of his love – us. That’s why he will expose, judge and destroy greed, pride, cruelty and untruth.
The essential nature of Jesus expresses itself in tears (John 11:35), compassion (Matthew 9:36), and a willingness to touch and heal those afflicted with leprosy (Mark 1:40-41).
And that’s why I can trust him with my dying.
Prayer:Â Â Loving God, when the world was bewildered about what sort of God could build the universe, you came to us as Jesus and showed us. You also showed us the terrible lengths you would go to, to win us back to yourself.
Your grace takes my breath away.
