Reflection: He Always Lives to Intercede
Here is an intriguing and often overlooked truth. Jesus didn’t just save us by dying on a cross 2,000 years ago. It is not the case that since Jesus returned to be with the Father he does nothing but sit on his hands. As the following verses make clear, Jesus continues to intercede for us (i.e. to speak to the Father on our behalf) when we sin (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25).
This is good news for those of us who are being forced to face our mortality.
God the Father is not a grumpy God who needs Jesus to speak on our behalf in order to be placated about our sin. Rather, when we sin, Jesus’ love for us means that he presents himself to the Father, and the two of them rejoice at the fact that Jesus, by his death on our behalf, has paid the price for our sins. The plan for our salvation was conceived by the Father and carried out by Jesus. So, whenever you sin and repent, Jesus presents your case to the Father, and points to his sacrifice on your behalf.
I suspect at that point both Father and Son smile.
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for who you are. Your love is relentless, and you will work with the Father to ensure that all your people come home. I very much want to be amongst their number.
