Series Introduction
For the next two weeks, we will be reading the Bible with Dr Nick Hawkes, as he blesses us with Part 2 of his “reflections and encouragement from somewhere near the end”.
Reflection: Faithful Service
I have asked God not to grow my ministry beyond that which my character can sustain. I have no wish for success to “turn my head” so that I bring Christianity into disrepute. Too many Christian leaders have allowed their egos to sabotage their ministry and have brought shame on the church. I don’t want to be one of them.
But praying this prayer leaves me feeling discontent, because I also want to do things that are worthy of God. The desperate times we are currently living in mean that I cannot be content with small things. And yet, I am also aware that God sees things differently to me. He rewards those who do things as modest as giving a thirsty person a cup of water (Mark 9:41). The best thing I can aspire to is therefore this: to be faithful rather than successful. So that is my prayer.
But I also dare to pray: ‘Father, please grow your character in me, so that I can be entrusted with bigger things that will bring you honour.’
Prayer: Loving Father, as life’s shadows lengthen, I find I am less resilient and little things frustrate. Please help me to finish well, for my heart’s desire is to bring you glory.
