Reflection: Perfect Peace
It is easy to feel a deep weariness of the soul when we encounter the trials of life. We ache for peace. Peace is beautiful. Peace has overtones of everything being done; of everything being resolved and in its right place. Peace means that “good” has won and the battle is over. It is that delicious afterglow where you exult in the knowledge that nothing has any power to threaten you.
In today’s passage, the Old Testament prophet, Isaiah, doesn’t just speak about peace. He speaks about ‘perfect peace’. Wow! I can’t even imagine that. What is more, he speaks of a peace that exists independent of the hardship and horrors that might be going on around you. It is the sort of peace that Jesus gives (John 14:27). It is a peace that comes from having faith in the one who will have the last word. It is trusting the one who has ultimate power. It is the peace that comes from being positioned in God’s family and being placed under his eternal protection. It is a peace that comes when all things unfinished, unfair and unknown find their resolution in God.
And what part do we play in all of this? The key to having this extraordinary divine peace is to have a steadfast faith in God, a faith that doesn’t waver because of adverse circumstances.
So there it is: our steadfastness unlocks the door to God’s sublime peace. Do enjoy it.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I don’t understand what ‘perfect peace’ is. I just know that I ache for it like a desperately thirsty traveller. But I see glimpses of it, and it is beautiful.
Please teach me to see it more clearly.
