Reflection: God tells us who are his people to be different from everybody else—in this regard: We are not to fear what they fear.
When the rest of the world lives in fear of cancer (or anything else) you are not to. You are to be different. For you, only one thing is to be feared—and that is the person of God. He alone is worthy of fear.
And this fear of God should not be terror, but holy awe for the one who has ultimate authority. Whilst the Old Testament says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10), it is meant to be the beginning of a right understanding about God, not the end. We need to retain a sense of awe of God, but also feel able to rest back into his love. The Bible says that those who only have a fearful attitude toward God have not been “made perfect in love”—for there “is no fear in love” (1 John 4:18).
So, honour God, and do not fear what they fear.
Prayer: Dear Father, you are the only one worthy of my fear, and the only one who is wholly worthy of my love. You have wooed me with your grace and won my heart.
