Reflection: Make no mistake, says the apostle, in an empathetic but sober tone. There’s a cosmic war going on. The hardships we face are a battle for our souls. But if the King did not withhold his own Son but surrendered him on behalf of us all…how, absolutely, will he not also thoroughly forgive and favour us along with his Son. Who dares make an accusation against those whom God has chosen? God himself has acquitted them!*
Meet my brother Joel, who shares the apostle’s confidence that, the blood of Jesus whispers peace within.** Joel was kidnapped and for each day of six months met face to face with questions of life, freedom and who’s in control. Not only was he taken through that trial by fire, for years he’d previously travelled a dark night of the soul. Saint Joel is one of the most godly men I know. His peace is deeply rooted in the confidence that, in his words, God has the upper hand.
Prayer: I affirm with gratefulness and confidence, Lord God, that nothing, absolutely nothing in all creation is capable of coming between me and your love through our Lord Jesus Christ. To those going through trial by fire, by your indwelling Spirit, confirm your love and commanding upper hand.
*Romans 8:31-33
