Reflection: ‘And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. ‘ Romans 8:30
The valley of the shadow of death. Have you been there?
Meet Saint Calvin.* He’s been there…and he’s there again. Limp, parched and waning in determination he steadies himself on a path-side rock. Now takes a seat wondering if another step’s worth the pain. That’s when his companion sits beside him, pulls out the thermos, hands Calvin the cup and begins to pour. Pours till it’s full. Pours to overflowing. Keeps pouring until they’re both soaked with courage, belly-laughing in hope, and ready to press on.
Like the author of Psalm 23, Calvin’s known his shepherd-companion to tend to every need, body and soul. Resting or on the move, on peaceful or perilous paths, in comforting or threatening circumstances the companion has already been there and is ever present to champion Calvin to the end. In fact, our shepherd brands the lives of all his saints with mercy, goodness and beauty, navigating us on paths that ultimately befit his praise.
Prayer: Blank. Sometimes I only come up with a blank when I come to you God. Depressed, languishing, doubting or just plain helpless, I’m full of blanks. Holy Spirit, you get that. Probing my deepest emotion, you re-express it as prayer and lay that in the Father’s lap. May this be my comfort, that you are cooperating with time, place and purpose to perfect all your saints and bring us to our forever-home.**
