Reflection: The importance of commitment
Faithfulness is an expression of commitment, and the clearest picture of commitment is God’s faithfulness towards the sanctity of marriage.
With marriages failing all around us, many Christians fight to maintain their commitment to the institution of marriage, fearful of the sense of failure and congregational disgrace were their marriage to be seen to disintegrate. Understandably, there have been, and are, many unhappy marriages. I’ve been married to Lynne for 44 years and during those years my faithfulness as a husband was indeed tested. I passed.
Lynne has one of the most generous hearts I have ever encountered. Yet, I reacted to her aloofness at times, she to my lack of sensitivity. Together we acknowledged these relational realities, chose to weather the storms that erupted and continued to build a commitment to marriage based upon mutual love, nurture, and respect. Without commitment, all we have are idle promises.
Question: How has marriage, or not being married, affected you?
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for your unconditional love for me. Help me to be faithful, loving and committed to in all my relationships (especially in my marriage). Amen.
