Reasons to Sing

Day 7 of 14

NIV

Psalms 138:5-6

5May they sing of the ways of the Lord,

for the glory of the Lord is great.

6Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly;

though lofty, he sees them from afar.

Reflection:

It does us good to occasionally ponder our own insignificance. I am a tiny creature who lives on a tiny planet for a brief flash of time. What do I matter? But to God — eternal, glorious, exalted — I do matter! Though he is far above us, he sees us. He notices us. And in this verse, we see that the smaller and the more insignificant we are, the more God notices us. It is his ‘way’ to look kindly on the lowly. This is something to sing of!

God has a particular interest in the lowly. Throughout the Bible he is on the side of the poor and the oppressed. Are you?

Prayer:

Exalted Father, lifter of the lowly and defender of the weak, thank you for your grace to us — the small and underserving. Give us the humility to see people as you see them and love them as you love them in Jesus our Lord.  Amen.

Psalms 138:1-8

Psalm 138

Of David.

1I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart;

before the “gods” I will sing your praise.

2I will bow down toward your holy temple

and will praise your name

for your unfailing love and your faithfulness,

for you have so exalted your solemn decree

that it surpasses your fame.

3When I called, you answered me;

you greatly emboldened me.

4May all the kings of the earth praise you, Lord,

when they hear what you have decreed.

5May they sing of the ways of the Lord,

for the glory of the Lord is great.

6Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly;

though lofty, he sees them from afar.

7Though I walk in the midst of trouble,

you preserve my life.

You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes;

with your right hand you save me.

8The Lord will vindicate me;

your love, Lord, endures forever—

do not abandon the works of your hands.
