Reflection: In order for anyone to walk away from their faith, they will, at some point, have listened to a lie. Sometimes, they are lies we tell ourselves and sometimes they are lies we hear from others. Understanding this is important because the Bible speaks of Satan being the ‘Father of lies’ (John 8:44), in direct contrast to God who is described as the God of truth (John 3:33). So, let me assure you that truth exists, and it matters a lot to God (Psalm 51:6).
The relevance of this for those facing a crisis of faith is this: try and identify what you suspect might be the lie, then research the facts and, crucially, talk with God about it. God wants you to know his truth and will therefore help you.
Whenever someone tells me they don’t believe in God, I usually ask them why… and then I listen and wait. I’m waiting for the lie. And when I hear it, I know what needs to be addressed – if the time is right to address it.
In any crisis, you will be greatly helped if you set your heart on finding truth.
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, in these times of toxic social discourse, I can find it hard to speak to others about you. Show me how to hold the shield of faith so that I might stand and prevail.
