Reflection: When being threatened by a crisis of faith, it is good to do a ‘stock take’ of the reasons why you believe. If you have thought it through well, you will end up smiling. When people ask me for the reasons why I believe, I usually say something like this:
Christianity makes sense rationally. The universe shows levels of design. If the relative strengths of the electromagnetic force and the gravitational force had differed by as much as one 10,000 trillion, trillion, trillionth, we would not have life on any planet. This statistic, and others like it, deserve more than a lazy shrug of the shoulders. Certainly, to not believe in God, and to believe that everything came from nothing as a result of nothing – is hardly rational!
Christianity makes sense historically. Christianity is not a philosophy or a spiritual theory. It is founded on concrete historical events that can be forensically examined. Even non-Christian historians living near the time of Jesus (people like Tacitus and Josephus) wrote about him.
Christianity makes sense morally. The morality of Jesus has never been improved on, and nations thrive best when they have an authentic underlying Christian culture.
Christianity makes sense experientially. Nothing transforms individuals, families, cities, and nations for the better than Christianity.
I hope that helps.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, you have done everything to point people to you short of forcing them. Please open my eyes to your greatness seen in creation, and the greatness that lies beyond it.
