Reflection: “You are my son”
When we explore the affirmations of God the Father, to his Son, Jesus, it can be seen that each of these declarations over the Son have implications for those of us who are children of God.
In Luke 3:21-22 we read, ‘When all the people were being baptised, Jesus was baptised too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”’ That’s a powerful declaration. ‘Whose’ you are defines you more than what you are and what you do. You are a child of the Father.
Knowing God as Father, by inference means that I am his child.
“The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father’.” (Romans 8:15)
One day, Jesus asked his disciples who people were saying he was. If you’ve read anything in the Gospels, you won’t be surprised to know that Simon Peter happily took the role as spokesman for the group; identifying Jesus as the Messiah, sent by God.
There’s something wonderful that happens when I discover who Jesus is. He helps me discover who I am. That’s what he did for Simon that day. “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” (Matthew 16:18 NIV).
Having given Peter (which means rock, or as I prefer to call him, Rocky), clear awareness of his identity, Jesus gave him something else: an invitation to embark on life’s great adventure; showing the love of the Father to a lost and hurting world.
Prayer: Lord, help me today to live fully aware of who I am because of Jesus. I choose to find my identity, not in position or possessions, but through my relationship with you. I receive the work of your Holy Spirit today helping me to walk as your child.
