Reflection: In need of forgiveness and mercy but seen by the crowd to be undeserving. He was privileged, wealthy, and employed.
We may know many people who fit this description: a neighbour, a colleague, a classmate.
Zacchaeus. A man who wanted to see Jesus, who wanted to see Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus positioned himself to be seen. Something motivated him to be noticed by Jesus.
And that’s precisely what happened. Only instead of Jesus offering hospitality, he asked Zacchaeus to provide it. An immediate, joy-filled response. Hospitality signalled acceptance, identification, and trust. Jesus invited himself to lunch. Zacchaeus accepted.
A lot happens around a table, over a meal. We get to be present. Putting away our devices, we enter conversation, getting to know each other, sharing something of ourselves. A chance to encourage, to restore hope, to share dreams, to express gratitude.
For Zacchaeus, that lunch experience restored the ‘shalom’. Once benefitting from his underhand activities, he settled to those he had defrauded. Now accepted, he found courage to change.
Look up into the tree, meet for lunch, be someone who accepts. Just like the lesson of Zacchaeus in the presence of Jesus.
Prayer: Give me eyes to see and courage to enter someone else’s world. Make me an agent of restoration.
