Reflection: Yesterday, we looked at the Great Commandment (Matt 22:34-40). I used to think this was two commandments – love God, and love others – but that begged the question: Why, when asked which is the greatest commandment (singular), did Jesus seemingly add a second?
Today’s Scripture, which appears three chapters later in the book of Matthew, gives us a clue…
If we truly believe that all people have been created in the image of God, then the way we treat others is the way we treat God. That’s why Jesus says that when we feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and care for the sick, we (metaphorically) feed, shelter, and care for God.
And, if we read on in this passage, we see that the opposite is also true. When we turn our backs on those in need, when we put up walls to keep others out, when we write off those who have made mistakes, we do these things to God.
Put another way, loving God and loving our neighbour are two expressions of the same commandment; two sides of the same coin.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, our love of God can be seen most clearly in our treatment of those who are vulnerable, isolated, marginalised. May this challenge and encourage us in our thoughts and actions today – and every day.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you call us into the pain of this world and to those who are hurting. Please give us eyes to see, ears to hear, and the courage to go where You tell us. As we look into the faces of those in need, may we glimpse your face, and know that you are right there with us. Amen.
