Reflection: Love is not easy because love is to give. It means giving of yourself and what you love. However, in the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus calls us to go and do likewise.
The pandemic taught Christians and churches a big lesson. We are aware that churches are no longer limited to worship in buildings on Sundays. The Church exists through every Christian who shows Christ-like love to others, especially in the difficult times.
My church is located in the inner city, where the young and affluent sit side-by-side with addicts, drug dealers and those experiencing homelessness. Who is my neighbour? Not just those who live in beautiful houses or boutique apartments. The people in the community are my neighbours regardless of their social status, gender, intellectual ability. Ignoring them is never an option. The only option is to love them as Jesus commands us: “Go and do likewise.”
Love is the essence of our new life. Love is the most profound relationship we have with God! The love of Christ inspires us to love others, even if it is not easy.
Prayer: Gracious God, please grant us your love to love those we find hard to love. Help us to show them the love of God. Amen.
We are reading the Bible with NAYBA Australia, which helps churches to love their neighbour. Reverend Yvonne Poon is the Minister at St Matthias Anglican Church and a member of the NAYBA Advisory Council for Victoria & Tasmania.
