Reflection:
Have you ever thought about the natural world that God has created as a neighbour? The environment in which we live and move; the water and air that we may take for granted, the insects that pollinate the flowers and provide an essential role in the ecosystem; the rain forests that function like the lungs of the world renewing the air; the pets that share our homes; the birds whose songs wake us in the morning. Â
Genesis 1 tells us that God created…and it was good. What are our responsibilities to respect and care for the natural world? What is the legacy that we will leave for our children, grandchildren and future generations? How will they live? Our Pacific Island neighbours know the reality of rising oceans, the threat of tsunamis and the danger to their homes and livelihoods. Closer to home, bushfire and floods on an ever-growing scale and frequency cause untold damage to lives, homes, livestock, wildlife and futures and cost our nation millions of dollars. How do we honour God’s precious creation?
Prayer:
Oh Lord,Â
You have created the world with your hands. All creation reflects your wonder and glory. All peoples depend upon your creation to sustain life now and into the future. You have entrusted us to tend the earth. Help me to treat the earth like my neighbour, with respect and loving care.Â
