Reflection:
We find these words in the very last parable that Matthew records. Its setting is the Last Judgment when Christ the King evaluates the life’s work of all who come before him. Early in the Gospel we read: ‘Not everyone who says to me, `Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven’.
The life of discipleship takes believers to unexpected places; it takes them to the place of God’s suffering in the world; it takes them to the cross in human lives. It is in these neighbours that God meets us. God is outside the circle we draw and the boundaries we create. The body of Christ is already waiting for the community of faith in those suffering in the world. We do not take God with us in mission; God is already there to meet us. Do we have eyes to see?
Prayer: Dear Lord, every day you come to us in the form of people in need of food, clothing, shelter, refuge, comfort, support or friendship. Some we meet personally; others come through our screens and newspapers. I am sorry when I do not recognize you in their faces and stories; they are all your children who bear your image. May I respond lovingly as a good and kind neighbour to each one, as I would to you.
